The United States Five Cents coin (written as 5¢) is a unit of currency equalling one-twentieth of a United States dollar; the denomination is commonly known as a "nickel". The Jefferson Nickel has been the five-cent coin (abbreviated as 5¢) struck by the United States Mint since 1938, when it replaced the Buffalo Nickel.

The original reverse design of the echidna on standard circulating coins has not been changed since the introduction.
